AMCI TESTING CERTIFICATION OVERVIEW
AMCI Testing’s Certification protocol is based on the statistical imperative for unbiased, repeatable results:
Testing was conducted over two specific routes: AMCI Testing’s Real-World City/Highway Route (commute-driving simulation in Normal Mode) and AMCI Testing’s Real-World City Route (city-driving simulation in Range Mode)
Due to vehicle availability, testing was conducted in two waves: first Taycan Turbo and Taycan Turbo S; then Taycan 4S
All driving was done during weekdays at the same time of day
Each vehicle began every test cycle with its state-of-charge (SOC) indicator at 100%
Each was operated on course until it entered its restricted-power “limp home” mode—which was considered the vehicle’s terminal mileage for battery depletion
All accessory loads were held consistent during each testing cycle and headlights were set to “Auto”
Specific to the AMCI Testing City/Highway Route:
The Taycan 4S, Taycan Turbo, and Taycan Turbo S were operated in Normal Mode with Regen set to “Auto” and HVAC to “ECO”
Driving was precisely coordinated at the speed of traffic up to and including the legal speed limit during city driving, and up to 5 MPH over the legal limit on highways
Specific to the AMCI Testing City Route:
The Taycan 4S, Taycan Turbo and Taycan Turbo S were operated in Range Mode with Regen set to “On” and HVAC to “Off”
Driving was precisely coordinated at the speed of traffic up to and including the legal speed limit
ABOUT AMCI TESTING
What Is AMCI Testing?
AMCI Testing is an independent automotive research firm committed to unbiased, comparative evaluations of automotive products. AMCI Testing evaluates, tests and critiques more than 150 cars and trucks each year at our test facilities in Southern California and private proving grounds worldwide.
Who does AMCI Testing work with?
For more than 35 years, major automotive OEMs have hired AMCI Testing as an impartial check on internal engineering achievements, and a third-party perspective on competitive vehicles in segment. We provide an anchoring outsider viewpoint on crucial marketing, branding, training and final product decisions.
The Importance Of Objectivity
Truth—as substantiated by scientific process and hard data—has always been the cornerstone of AMCI Testing’s commitment to our clients and consumers. We have spent more than three decades developing analytical protocols in nearly 400 areas—from performance and quality to long-term reliability and emissions.
In the absence of a national standard, MP6 uses the most reliable, accessible network to date: Tesla Supercharger and its ‘Magic Dock’ adapter.
WHY WE CHOSE 6 MINUTES.
Six minutes is the average time it takes to fuel an ICE vehicle. When you are out of charge or time in your EV, charging speed is what counts. Further, “To achieve the environmental promise of EVs there needs to be a greater emphasis on fast charging, not range,” according to AMCI Global CEO, David Stokols.
CHARGING SPEED OR RANGE?
According to Guy Mangiamele, Director of AMCI Testing, “There needs to be equal emphasis on vehicle range and charging speed. Regardless of range, when on the road, when short of time, or short of range, charging speed is what really matters.”
TEST METHODOLOGY
With EV charging methodology established over a decade, our proprietary protocol begins with 10% state of charge, MP6 is calculated over numerous charging sessions at stations always exceeding the vehicle’s maximum charge rate.
AMCI TESTING
AMCI Testing is an independent automotive research firm, specializing in unbiased, evaluations of automotive products since 1984. The breadth of our testing includes ICE, EVs, Hybrids, FCEV and other powertrains plus every facet of measurement and product category. AMCI Testing Certification is recognized as an industry gold standard.
